To qualify for 5% back, the rotating categories must be activated every quarter. Chase cardholders will be able to activate bonus categories online and in the Chase app before March 14, 2023. Bonus rewards can also be earned retroactively (purchases made during the quarter, but not prior to activation) so you can still get bonus rewards. Bonus rewards for eligible Discover cards can be earned beginning from the date that cash-back categories are activated online.
These are some tips to maximize your quarter’s 5% bonus categories
Tip
Existing cardholders can still earn 5% cashback based on the Chase Freedom Flex(sm) bonus calendar.
Optimizing Chase Freedom Flex(sm),
Incentivize your fitness resolutions
Chase’s Q1 Bonus Categories may be a good option if your New Year’s Resolution is to get in some exercise after the holidays.
Chase Freedom Flex(sm), cardholders may earn bonus cash back on memberships to fitness clubs and gyms. This includes national and local clubs, as well as facilities that require membership. CrossFit, yoga, and aerobic classes are also eligible. You can purchase an annual membership or package that can be used beyond the current quarter and lock in your 5% cash back rate.
Note: Some fitness centers sell products or offer services such as nutrition assessments. These businesses might not be eligible for bonus cash back. The bonus cash back may not be available to individual businesses within the club, such as juice bars and coffee shops. It all depends on what is known as the merchant code. To confirm that you will earn these large rewards, check your card statement.
Get groceries or gift cards in grocery stores
Grocery shops are a bonus category at Chase and Discover for this quarter. Depending on your resolutions for 2023, “eating healthier at home” might work well with a gym membership.
You can’t use grocery store purchases for purchases made at Walmart, convenience stores, and wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco. Chase has its own 5% bonus for Target this quarter (see below), but you cannot double dip. This means that Target groceries would only earn you 5%, and not 10%.
You can buy third-party gift certificates at most grocery stores if you have both the Chase or Discover cards. If you’re looking for a gift card that will allow you to save 5%, then head to the gift cards rack. You can also purchase a gift certificate for your grocery store to use throughout the year.
Reach your Target
Target will be a Chase bonus category this quarter for the first-time. This means that you can get bonus cash back on everything, from consumer electronics to clothing, cosmetics, and more. You can also earn bonus cash back on online and in-app purchases. Make sure you add your Chase Freedom Flex(sm card) to Target.com and set it as your default payment option.
Target has a large gift card rack, similar to grocery stores. You might consider looking at third-party gift card options for Target if you’re not able to spend the Target spending limit this quarter.

Optimizing Cash Back
Discover is releasing its bonus categories quarterly for the first time in five year. Instead of releasing the entire calendar at the start of each year, this is the first time that Discover has done so. Although it may be more difficult to plan your spending, smart shoppers will still be able to find great value in the first quarter bonus categories.
Stock up on nonperishables
Discover selected grocery stores for a bonus category in the first three quarters of 2015. You can also use these strategies to get the Chase Freedom Flex(sm). Use your eligible Discover card and stock up on long-lasting items and essentials you can storepile. Remember that bonus rewards are not available for purchases made at Target, Walmart, and warehouse clubs.
While you’re out shopping, think about buying gift cards for other retailers that can be used throughout the year.
Stock up on essential health care
Do you need to replenish your first-aid kit Are you running out of toothpaste? You can visit your local CVS, Walgreens, or neighborhood drugstore if you run out of toothpaste.
You can shop online or in-person at drugstores.
Similar to grocery stores, major drugstores also have gift card racks.
Stream away
Each year, streaming services seem to be increasing in number. No matter what streaming service you choose, make sure your Discover credit card is the default payment option. Consider purchasing an annual subscription if you have a favorite streaming service that you intend to use throughout the year. This will lock in the bonus rate for the service beyond the first quarter.
Please note that streaming services that are bundled with other services, such as internet, a cell phone plan or another service, may not be eligible for the bonus rate.
