Why is it so bothersome to wait in line? There is no real difference between standing in line and waiting near the departure gate. Yet, both feel almost subhuman and the other is perfectly fine.

No matter what the psychological reason, travelers can find it frustrating to wait in long lines. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 626 million passengers walked through airport security in October 2022. This would create a line that could reach the moon.

It is possible to avoid waiting at airport security or in other lines. Travelers who are smart know how to skip the worst lines and, most importantly, how to avoid paying for them. We share our top budget-saving and line-skipping tips.

Airport security

Nothing sends a traveler’s heart racing faster than the sight a security line at an airport.

If the past summer is any indication, security lines at airports could be jammed this holiday season. Almost half (46%) of travelers plan to fly this holiday, more than the 40% in 2021 and 33% in 2020, according to a survey of 4,000 people by PwC, also known as PricewaterhouseCoopers.

There are three main ways to avoid these lines. However, it is difficult to see how they interact or overlap.

TSA Precheck

TSA offers PreCheck for U.S. Passenger. The PreCheck program offers members many benefits as they pass through airport security.

  • This is a separate checkpoint at most airports. The TSA reported that 90% of wait times were less than five minutes in October 2022.

  • Less restrictions at checkpoints. Members aren’t required to take off shoes, light jackets, or go through body scanners.

Global Entry

Do you remember the long lines that take forever to cross when you try to return to the U.S. after having traveled from another country to get there? That line doesn’t always move quickly. Pre-screened passengers can use self-service kiosks at immigration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry Program.

Here’s the deal: TSA PreCheck is part of Global Entry membership. TSA PreCheck is a better option than Global Entry, so you might be wondering why anyone would choose to sign up. There are many things to take into consideration when choosing between the programs.

For a complete breakdown, see the table below. TSA PreCheck is for travelers who aren’t planning to travel internationally and don’t want the hassle of an interview. Global Entry is better for everyone else.

Clear

There is one more option. It’s an add-on. Clear, a private company, provides biometric screening at many airports and allows passengers to skip the beginning line of security (up until where they check their I.D.). )

Clear membership can be obtained without TSA PreCheck membership. However, you will still need to remove your shoes. You can also combine both to get a faster line at participating airports span>

The biggest problem is the price. Clear is $189 per annum (not every five year like the other services). It’s possible to find credit card deals and discounts that will lower this price.

Rental cars

It can be frustrating to get off a long plane, then take the shuttle to the rental vehicle facility and then wait in the long line at the counter. Even this line can be skipped, as with most others — often for no cost.

  • Avis Privilege . Signing up for Avis’ loyalty programme lets you skip the lines and pick up your car from the lot.

  • Hertz Gold Plus Reward . While it might seem expensive to get “Gold Plus,” which allows you to skip the Hertz rental car counter, it is also completely free.

  • National Emerald Club. You can get a car from “Emerald Aisle” for free. Book a car of mid-size or larger size.

Hotels

Two lines are important to avoid when staying in a hotel. However, slow elevators are something that no one can control. )

Check-in

Many hotel loyalty programs offer elite members special lines. These status levels, which are not free like rental cars, can be earned with branded credit cards that often have low fees.

Despite this, many hotel brands now offer mobile check-in. Your phone can be used to check in and unlock your room. The Marriott Bonvoy app, for example, allows you to check in without having to use your phone. This makes it easy to pass through the lobby with its long line of tired travelers.

Check out

This tip is the easiest. You don’t need to wait until check-out at most hotels. You can drop your keys at the front desk and check out with your smartphone or, in many cases, walk out. This is particularly useful if you are checking out late and want to avoid the afternoon rush.

The bottom line

No one likes to wait in lines when they travel (except those who are called before their group is called). Many of the worst lines can be avoided.

TSA PreCheck and Global Entry memberships are the most labor-intensive and expensive of all options. However, they last five years and remove a lot of hassle. Free membership is also available for hotel mobile check in apps and rental car loyalty programs.

We are sure you will not be disappointed. Simply hitting the elevator button multiple times doesn’t make it appear any quicker.
