  • Additional possessions which can be converted into cash to pay for living expenses such as food and housing.

What doesn’t qualify as an asset?

  • The house and land it is situated on.

  • If you have a vehicle that is used by your family, it counts as one vehicle.

  • Personal items and household goods, such as wedding rings or engagement rings.

Who can’t get SSI benefits?

Here are a couple of reasons why you may not be eligible for SSI, despite meeting certain requirements regarding income and resources.

:

If you have an unresolved criminal charge, or a warrant of arrest

You’re currently in prison. It includes jails, prisons and other correctional institutions like halfway houses or detention centres. You will not be eligible for SSI if you are incarcerated in full months. You should still be able apply for SSI benefits prior to your release.

Your current residence is a public facility. You will not be eligible to receive SSI if you are in a government institution for a month, whether it is federal, local or state. If you are staying at a community-run residence or an emergency homeless shelter, there is an exemption.

To qualify, you transferred or sold assets. It isn’t a great workaround. You may be ineligible for SSI if you sell the asset or resource for less than the actual value to reach the income threshold. This could take up to 36 month. You may also be prevented from receiving SSI if you move assets to certain trusts.

If you are a citizen who is receiving SSI but have lost your noncitizenship, then the SSI benefits will stop. Your SSI will cease if you do not meet the criteria for non-citizen qualified status or if there is a warrant in place for deportation.

If you are traveling or living outside of the United States, for at least a month. You won’t qualify for SSI benefits if you are outside of the U.S. for a month. There are some exceptions, such as students who study abroad or children of parents in the military stationed abroad.

After you have been out of the U.S. continuously for 30 days, you will need to return to the U.S. and stay for 30 more days in order to qualify for SSI.
