Online job applications can seem cold and unpersonal. After applying for a position, you can reach out to a hiring manager or recruiter in order to learn more about the job and if your application is still being considered.

You should always follow the instructions provided in the job description. Job coaches say that if the job posting does not include instructions, applicants can follow up by phone or email.

Remember that the interview will begin at this time. You could use any communication to determine if you are someone who they would want to work for. It’s therefore important that you are thoughtful in how you present your self.

Amy Yandell is a career expert with Ama La Vida. She says authenticity is the key. Follow up with your employer after you have submitted an application in a manner that you are comfortable and is consistent with the way you would like them to perceive you.

Follow up on an application

If the job description does not specifically state that you are to avoid contacting the hiring manager or recruiter, then you can follow-up with an email or a call one to two week after applying. Your message should reiterate how excited you are about the job and what steps to take next. Ask if you are still considered for the position. Yandell claims that this not only gives you the opportunity to collect information but also allows you to customize the hiring process.

She says, “It brings humanity to a thing that is not very human.”

Follow up after one or two weeks

It could be that the length of time it takes to receive a response to a job offer has nothing to do your suitability for the position. Some companies, for example, will review job applications as soon as the applicants submit them while others wait until all of the applications have been received.

It can be excruciating, but give it time.

  • Diane Farrell is the director of Career Services at University of North Georgia. She says that if the posting for the position includes a deadline to apply, you should wait around a week after the date of the application before reaching out to the recruiter.

  • You should contact the employer one or two weeks after submitting your application if there is no application deadline posted.

  • Yandell recommends that you notify anyone you have had an informational interview with or who you know at the company within 24 hours after submitting your application.

Yandell says that the ultimate goal in all situations is “to keep your name on their mind.”

She says, “Then move on with your life.” Don’t waste time if someone does not respond. Our goal is to keep a dialogue open and move forward.

Contact the manager if possible.

The human resources department may receive job applications, while the recruiter listed as the contact is not the one who has the final decision on whether a candidate gets hired.

Farrell has been working in career services more than twenty years. He suggests that you follow up with the hiring manager if possible. This is the person who decides whether or not to fill the position. It’s likely that this would be your boss if you were hired. Your application could be sorted faster if you can establish a connection with the person who makes the final decision.

Farrell advises: “Submitting your application in the proper way is important, but you should also notify the hiring manager to let them know you are interested.” I think that shows you are willing to go the extra mile .”

Even if you cannot find the hiring manager for a job that was posted on social media, follow-up with the individual who did.

You don’t need to overthink

You can’t guess how an employer or recruiter is going to receive a letter, Yandell advises.

She says, “Approach hiring managers and recruiters with positive regard.” If they are invested in the job they do, then they will want to hire good candidates. The goal is to have a good relationship with the candidate. The positive attitude helps to reduce some of the anxiety about’should you reach out or not? .'”
